Floyd Mayweather Jr. opting to lose by default?

In an article from SuperSports, Floyd Mayweather Jr. violated a court order by US Federal Magistrate Judge Robert Johnston by failing to appear for deposition last Friday, June 17 in connection to the defamation lawsuit filed against him by boxer Manny Pacquiao. This defamation lawsuit was filed by Pacquiao last December 2009 in U.S. District Court in Nevada.

Earlier, Mayweather asked to move the scheduled deposition to a later date but that was denied by the court. Mayweather's avoidance of the deposition proceeding might be interpreted that he has no defense against the defamation charges and he has no solid proof on his alleged accusations against Manny Pacquiao regarding use of performance enhancing drugs.

Mayweather's lawyer pointed out the he has to concentrate on preparations for his September 17 fight with Victor Ortiz. That's about 12 weeks from now. His lawyers stated that Mayweather will be available for deposition after September 17.

From this recent turn of events, there's a chance that Floyd Mayweather Jr. loses by default in this defamation case unless the court grant him more time and Mayweather willing to state his side under oath in the court.

Mayweather's court trials, would it affect his preparation for Ortiz fight?

Mayweather's court trials, would it affect his preparation for Ortiz fight?

It's a welcome news to the boxing community that Floyd Mayweather Jr. just announced his intention to fight Victor Ortiz on September 17. After 13 months of vacation, Floyd finally find some urge to get inside the ring once again.

Mayweather vs. Ortiz is a good fight. Ortiz is a hungry, young champion coming from the biggest win of his 33 fight boxing career defeating former welterweight champion Andre Berto last April. Mayweather though is expected to crush the young lion in Ortiz and will be installed as the heavy pre-fight favorite in this match-up.

One factor that might affect Mayweather's preparation for this September fight is the numerous lawsuits he's now facing.

- charges of domestic violence and felony counts of grand larceny, coercion and robbery for allegedly beating his former girlfriend and stealing her cell phone

- defamation lawsuit that alleges Mayweather acted with malice by accusing Pacquiao of using performance-enhancing drugs

- misdemeanor case from allegations that Mayweather poked a security guard

- lawsuit alleges Mayweather bodyguard assaulted a bouncer

Court hearings/trials for these lawsuits already been scheduled. There's even one trial to be held on September 1, barely two weeks before the planned Ortiz fight. These hearings/trials might affect Mayweather's fight preparation. How big is the distraction, we won't know exactly.

Pacquiao sets another boxing record

Pacquiao sets a new boxing record as the only fighter in pay-per-view history to generate at least 1 million PPV buys for a fight in four (4) consecutive years.

2011: Pacquiao vs. Mosley - 1.3 million PPV buys
2010: Pacquiao vs. Margarito - 1.15 million PPV buys
2009: Pacquiao vs. Cotto - 1.2 million PPV buys
2008: Pacquiao vs. Dela Hoya - 1.25 million PPV buys

PPV buys in Pacquiao fights against Joshua Clottey (2010) and Ricky Hatton (2009) were also very good numbers.

Would Pacquiao make it five (5) consecutive years in 2012?
